Rally at St. Sabina's to "Silence the Violence". . . Queen of All Saints' Social Justice Ministry attended the rally at St. Sabina's the night of the huge storm June 18, to support Fr. Pfleger's rally to "Silence the Violence". Timed to coincide with the ending of the school year, Fr. Pfleger organized many community and city leaders to send a message that gang activity will not be tolerated.

Despite the thunderstorm of biblical proportions (see downed tree in the parking lot), the "Silence the Violence" rally at St. Sabina's was a huge success. By 7 p.m., the skies opened to a brilliant blue and Fr. Pfleger spoke passionately to the crowd to take back their community, to be unafraid, to say NO to violence. He urged local businesses to each hire at least one young person this summer. Mayor Daley challenged the crowd to take back their blocks and to say NO to gang activity. Ron Huberman, the CEO of Chicago Public Schools, said the high schools will be opened for students to come in and work for credits. Police Superintendent, Jody Weis, urged young people to text message the police if they see any suspicious activity about to happen.

One of our group from Queen of All Saints told a community member that we should have brought a sign. The woman answered, "You don't need a sign, ma'am. We're just glad you're here." The crowd numbered in the hundreds, and marched around the community to send the message to "Silence the Violence". Carol Marin was also in the crowd. It was her June 13, 2010 article in the Sun Times that alerted us to the need to support the cause of peace for all our children.

Chicago Skyline Line Drawing
Chicago Skyscrapers and The Ledge

The first skyscraper in the world was Chicago’s Home Insurance Building. Built in 1885, it was all of ten stories tall. Enjoy a day exploring the ensuing evolution of skyscrapers in Chicago. Travel to the skydeck of the Western Hemisphere’s tallest building, the Willis Tower, the former Sears Tower. Here you have the opportunity to step out onto the ledge, a glass box extending out four feet from the building, 103 stories up! The Ledge is comprised of three layers of 1/2 inch thick glass. Opened in the summer of 2009, it is Chicago’s newest attraction! On the driving part of the tour, see and learn the fascinating history of Chicago’s original skyscrapers such as the 1929 Palmolive Building, which later became Playboy Tower, the telescoping 1930 Board of Trade, and the 1958 Inland Steel Building. Marvel at the city’s more recent architectural wonders; the AON Center, the former Standard Oil Building, now America’s fourth tallest building. Also see Lake Point Tower, with its famous residents past and present, and the Metropolitan Correctional Center, with its infamous “guests.” Of course, see the newest member of Chicago’s skyline, the magnificent Trump Tower. Lunch today is at the Mity Nice Grill in Water Tower Place, our city’s remarkable retail high rise on Michigan Ave.

Presented by the QAS Widowed Group. All are invited! (You don’t have to be a Widowed Group member to join us!)

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Little Rock Spripture Study

Queen of All Saints will offer two Little Rock Scripture Studies this fall, Introduction to the Bible and The Acts of the Apostles.

Introduction to the Bible is designed to open the Bible with newcomers and experienced Bible students alike. Participants will become comfortable finding their way around the Bible, develop a better understanding of its themes and writing styles, and gain clear insights about Catholic use and interpretation of the Bible. The Acts of the Apostles shows how the excitement of Pentecost enlivened the early believers in their struggles to establish communities of faith – struggles surprisingly like those today.

Introduction to the Bible study has thirteen sessions. They will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The sessions will begin on Tuesday August 24th and run until Tuesday November 16th.

The Acts of the Apostles study has nineteen sessions. We will be offering the sessions on Monday morning from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. and Thursday evening from 7:30 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The morning sessions will begin on August 23rd and run until January 10th . The evening sessions will begin on September 16th and run until February 10th.

All sessions will be held in the second floor of the Benedict Center (6275 N. Ionia Ave.). Introduction to the Bible and The Acts of the Apostles will cost twenty ($20.00) dollars to cover the cost of the materials used.
